AEO vs SEO for businesses in the Gulf, the Levant and Egypt
Most marketing teams in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha and Cairo already pay for SEO. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO, also sold as GEO or “AI SEO”) is the newer line item: being named, and described correctly, when customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Mode for a recommendation. This guide sets out where the two overlap for a business in the Gulf, the Levant and Egypt, where they part ways, and how to split a budget and a team between them.

The short version
SEO earns a place in a list of links. AEO earns a place in a written answer that may be the only thing the customer reads. The same foundations serve both, but AEO spends far more time on pages you do not own, and on the Arabic side of your presence, than most SEO programmes in the region do today.
What your SEO work already gives you
- Indexable pages in both languages. Assistants that search depend on search indexes. An Arabic site that search engines cannot crawl is invisible to Arabic answers too.
- Correct hreflang between the English and Arabic versions, so each language is found by the right searches and neither is treated as a duplicate.
- Map listings for every branch. Gemini and Google AI Mode sit on Google’s systems and can draw on the same local data your local SEO already maintains.
- Links and press. Coverage in Khaleej Times, Gulf News or The National, or in trade media, builds authority for rankings and gives assistants an independent source to quote.
- Fast, clean technical foundations, with structured data (Schema) that matches the visible text.
If those are shaky, fix them first. AEO work built on an Arabic site that does not render, or on branches missing from the map, will not hold.
Where AEO parts ways with SEO
- Portals and publishers weigh more than your site. For property, the answer is often assembled from Bayut, Property Finder, dubizzle and broker roundups; for restaurants and retail, from Zomato, Talabat and Time Out Dubai. Your own page may never be cited.
- A ranking is not a mention. A developer can rank well on Google for its own project names and still be left out when a buyer asks which developer to trust.
- Language splits the result. The Arabic answer to a question can name different businesses from the English answer, and questions typed in Gulf, Levantine or Egyptian dialect match different pages again.
- Cities split it further. Dubai and Sharjah, Riyadh and Jeddah, Amman and Irbid can each produce their own shortlist for the same question.
- Description matters. An answer calls you premium or affordable, family-friendly or corporate, reliable or slow to deliver. That framing reaches the customer before your own pages do.
- Questions are conversations. “A clinic in Abu Dhabi that accepts my insurance and has a female dermatologist” is not a keyword. Content has to answer situations like that.
Measuring each one
SEO has impressions, clicks and rankings in Search Console, and traffic in analytics. AEO has no equivalent report from the platforms. Google counts AI Mode traffic inside Search Console’s overall web search figures, and visits from AI answers show up in analytics as referrals only when someone clicks. In a region where many enquiries arrive by WhatsApp or a phone call, a large share of the value of a mention leaves no trace in analytics at all.
So AEO is measured from the answers: ask the questions customers ask, in each language and city, many times, and record who is named. Measuring AI visibility covers the numbers, and how to report them on your own working week.
Splitting the work by sector
- Property developers: keep SEO on project pages and launches; put AEO effort into portal profiles, broker and news coverage, and pages that answer buyer questions about payment plans, handover records and communities.
- Hospitals and clinics: keep SEO on specialty and doctor pages; add AEO work on insurance, languages and licences per branch, and on health directories and review platforms that answers cite.
- Hotels: keep SEO on booking pages; add AEO work on guides and roundups that answers quote, and on clear descriptions of who the hotel suits.
- Retailers and restaurants: keep local SEO on the map; add AEO work on delivery and review platforms such as Talabat and Zomato, and on Arabic menus and product names customers use.
Choosing an agency or a tool
Many SEO agencies in the region now offer AEO or GEO. Ask any provider which platforms they measure, whether they ask questions in Arabic as well as English, which cities they measure from and how the platform is told the location, how many answers sit behind each number, and whether you can read the answers themselves. A provider that shows only a score, from English questions asked once, is measuring very little of your market.
Claims to treat with care
- “English is enough, the AI translates.” Arabic questions are often answered from Arabic pages. If yours are thin, other businesses fill the answer.
- “AEO replaces SEO.” Search-based answers depend on search systems; weak SEO undermines AEO.
- “A file will put you in ChatGPT.” llms.txt is a proposal some sites adopt. No major platform has said it decides which businesses are recommended.
- “We can guarantee a recommendation.” Paid placements, where platforms offer them, are labelled ads. Nobody can sell a guaranteed place in the organic answer.
How Pharos helps
Pharos measures the AEO side that SEO tools do not see. It asks your customers’ questions in English and Arabic, per city, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode, records who is named, how you are described and which regional sources are cited, and turns the gaps into recommendations. It connects to Google Analytics and Google Search Console so your SEO view sits beside it.
